Easter Food

In my family Easter has always been more about food than about catholic traditions.

Traditional Easter cake is called ‘pinca’ in Istria and it’s sweet bread with raisins, and it’s one of the reasons why children love Easter.

I remember my nonna baking Eastern braid for my sister, my cousins and me.

I loved the sweet bread and the best thing to do was to eat it immediately after it’s baked because after a day or two it would become a little bit hard.

It is a custom to eat lamb for Easter, lamb in the pot or lamb gulash. If they cant afford lamb, people usually prepare fusi with chicken gulash and cabbage.

And for breekfast sweet bread is served with ham, cheese, eggs and the most important young onion called ‘skalonja’.

And of course you need to paint the eggs and decorate the house with bunnies and chicks.

Buona Pasqua a tutti!
